Puerto Rico – General Overview

Besides the wonderful beaches offered at the resorts and hotels, there are a number of great public beaches in Puerto Rico that offer a variety of activities. Ocean Park Beach attracts more singles and adults, and is a great location for sunbathing, people watching and swimming, as is Isla Verde Beach to the east. Luquillo Beach east of San Juan is famous for the clear water and soft sand. This beach is lined by beautiful coconut groves and the water is ringed by coral reefs, making the waters smooth. Another great swim spot is the Playa de Ponce which is less crowded than Luquillo and has great swimming conditions year round. Boqueron Beach on the island of Cape Cod offers the best scenery and a wonderful location for scuba. If you are looking for a more secluded beach location, then Rosado Beach is for you.

Travel & Transportation

Nearly all travelers arrive in Puerto Rico by air via Luis Muñoz Marín (LMM) International Airport. The airport is located just outside San Juan and receives international flights from all over the world, including the US and UK.

Puerto Rico is also a popular stop for many cruise lines and the majority of them moor in San Juan.

Entry Requirements

Puerto Rico is one of only two exceptions to the new US passport laws. Citizens of the United States can travel to the island without a passport or any other special requirements. Travelers only need a US ID.

Languages Spoken / official language – Spanish is the most commonly spoken language, but English is spoken in most touristy locations and hotels.

Currency – Currency is the US dollar.

Taxes & Tipping -Tipping is similar to that in the United States. You should plan on tipping an additional 15% for any restaurants, bars, cafes, etc.  Hotel rooms include an additional 11% hotel tax and most hotels add an additional 10% service charge. There is no airport departure tax.

Electricity – Electricity is the same as the US and Canada, so no special adapters are required.

Immunizations Health Issues - No immunizations are required to visit Puerto Rico. Travelers should stick with bottled water even though tap water is deemed safe for drinking. 

Puerto Rico Marriage License & Wedding Requirements Information

There is no residency requirement on Puerto Rico. Blood tests are required, however, but they can be performed in the U.S. ten days before the couple arrives in Puerto Rico. The couple will need to have a physical while on the island because a physician in Puerto Rico must sign the marriage license. Additional information is available from the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico Health Department.

Marriage License Information

Marriage license papers may be requested in writing from the Dept. of Health, Demographic Registry Office, Box 11854, Fernandez Juncos Station, Santurce, PR 00910 (allow 2 months) or call (787) 728-7980.

Both parties must appear at the City Court office to purchase a marriage license. Persons 16-17 years of age must have the consent of their parents or legal guardians to marry. Blood tests are required.

If either party is a citizen or resident of a country other than the U.S, a declaration certifying that he or she is not married must be sworn before a Notary Public or other person authorized to administer paths in that country. This declaration must accompany the application.

If applicable, divorce must be finalized in the state or country where it was granted. A divorced person must provide a ‘certified’ copy of his or her final divorce decree, and a person whose former spouse has died must provide a certified copy of death certificate with a raised seal prior to a marriage license being granted.

Climate Information (When is the Best Time to Travel)

Puerto Rico is able to boast some of the most unvarying temperatures in the world, with temps staying between 75-85 degrees year round. The hottest time of year, and the wettest, is during August. The coolest weather on the island is in the higher altitude areas of Cordillera. 

High & Low Season for travel - The high season is from mid-December to mid-April and the low season is from mid-April to mid-December.

If you want to do some sightseeing, the best place to go is Old San Juan where you will see the cobble stone streets and great historic buildings and sites such as the old fort of El Morro. You could also take a nice day trip to El Yunque which is the only rainforest in the United States National Forest System. You will enjoy lush vegetation and amazing wild life you won’t see anywhere in the US. There are also numerous beaches that offer the opportunity to swim, dive and snorkel along with great water sports and fishing opportunities. The country also offers a variety of museums, art galleries, and historical landmarks to explore. You can find a little bit of everything to see and do in Puerto Rico.

Named one of the best hotels on the island, the Bravo! Beach Hotel offers amazing service and great accommodations for reasonable rates.

The Horned Dorset Primavera is a secluded resort offering suites and villas high on a hillside on the Western shore of Puerto Rico. Not such a value, as some nights can run over $500, but this hotel offers luxurious accommodations you won’t find at some of the more bargain priced hotels.

If you are searching for an all-inclusive resort, try the Copamarina Beach Resort. This beautiful resort is nestled among beautiful, lush vegetation and is actually a former coconut plant.

The Villa Montana Beach Resort offers beautiful villas on a plantation style resort. Prices are reasonable and service is excellent.

If you want a more well known resort, the Hyatt Dorado Beach Resort and Country club is located on the north coast and offers enough amenities that you may never leave hotel property. It includes eight restaurants and a full bar.

Though there are numerous beaches on the island, there are some that really stand out. The Woodlands Beach is a wildly popular picnic spot due to the cliff top picnic area that overlooks the crystal clear waters. The beaches on the island are mostly black sand, due to the island’s volcanic origins.

Another popular beach location is Rendezvous Bay, which is the island’s only white sand beach. However, this beach is only accessible by boat or an extreme hike. It is worth it for the world class snorkeling, diving and swimming of this beautiful bay.

Little Bay is a popular swimming beach with lots of little bars and snack stands. Carr’s Bay is another hotspot, especially for sunbathers. Also, there is an reef at the south end of the beach which is a great spot for snorkeling.

Old Road Beach is still a popular location with a beautiful sandy beach, but many come here to see the mud flows caused by the island’s active volcano.

Most visitors travel to Montserrat through Antigua or St. Maarten either by air or chartered helicopter.

Entry Requirements

A valid passport is recommended for all visitors; however, US Canadian and British citizens may present a driver’s license or official ID card as proof of citizenship. Entry visas may be required of visitors from other countries such as Cuba and Eastern Bloc Countries, and can be obtained from British Consulate offices. An onward or return ticket is required. There shall be proof of accommodation and one must possess sufficient funds to sustain ones self for the length of the visit.

Tipping - A service charge of 10% will be added to your bill in nearly all locations. Additional tipping is generally reserved for exceptional service.

Taxes – A departure and security tax of $22 is charged to all visitors departing the island. There is also a 7-10% tax for lodgings and varies based on the accommodations.

Electricity – The volts may be higher than us voltage in some locations, but there are transformers readily available that will allow for the usage of American electrical appliances.

Immunizations Health Issues - No immunizations are necessary unless arriving from a country known to have outbreaks of cholera, yellow fever or small pox, in which case, a certificate of immunization is required.

Montserrat Marriage License & Wedding Requirements Information

For visiting non-nationals a minimum stay of 3 working days in Montserrat is required before application can be made to obtain a special or Governor’s Marriage License. Application for the license is made through the Department of Administration. The following documents are required:

Climate Information (When is the Best Time to Travel)

Winter and summer temperatures average between 76° to 88° with constant breezes from the sea and mountains. The annual rainfall is about 1,250-2,000 mm or 50-80 inches, well distributed throughout the year, with a wetter season from July to November.

High & Low Season for travel - High season is mid-November through mid-April and low season is from mid-April to mid-November.

Local Attractions & Must Do’s

A trip to Montserrat’s former capital city of Plymouth has to make your list of things to see. It has been abandoned since 1997 when the volcano last erupted, leaving the city a wasteland. 

Jack Boy Hill is an excellent location for viewing the volcano and also some of the areas that have been destroyed by the volcano’s past eruptions, including the former airport and destroyed villages and estate houses. If you are interested in learning more about the volcano, visit the Montserrat Volcano Observatory where you con meet scientists and learn about the techniques used to monitor this volatile volcano.

The dream of former Beatles producer George Martin, the Montserrat Cultural Centre often hosts concerts and events. A huge accomplishment for the people of Montserrat, it is the pride and joy of the island.

You should also check out Carr’s Bay Historical Site where you will find the remains of an old fort, including several canons still pointing out to sea. There is also a model of the War Memorial and Clock Tower which was destroyed in the city of Plymouth by the island’s volcano.

Martinique – General Overview

Martinique is an island serving up sophisticate yet folksy charm. The Martiniquais are a warm and welcoming people who enjoy interacting with the tourists who flock to their island. You can enjoy restaurants, nightclubs, casinos as well as more natural activities like scuba diving, snorkeling and golf. Though the island has a tumultuous past, including the destruction of the cultural city of St. Pierre, it offers numerous diversions and is a great place to come to soak up the sun or explore the wilderness of the southern part of the island.   The beaches are amazing and have beautiful rosy sand in the south and there are coral beaches in the north. If you are a history buff, there are a number of small museums and art galleries, all of which offer a glimpse into the interesting history of the island. This island offers so much to see and do, it would be impossible to see in it all in just one trip… a great reason to keep going back.

Most Popular Beaches

Considered to be the best beach on Martinique, Les Salines is quiet and uncrowded with beautiful white sand and coconut palms. Waters here are generally calm and great for swimming. Another beach that is quiet during the week is Diamant Beach which is a favorite spot for locals to picnic.

Anse Corps de Garde is another beautiful white sand beach located on the Caribbean coast. The swimming is great due to the super still waters. If you are more interested in windsurfing or skiing, you should head for Pointe du Marin, and you can enjoy the great restaurants and bars while you are there.

Keep in mind, most beaches are topless. Also, the waters on the Caribbean side of the island are much calmer than and safer for swimming.

The airport near Fort-de-France offers daily flights from the US and other islands in the Caribbean. You can also arrive via ferries or catamarans from neighboring islands like St. Lucia, Dominique, and Guadeloupe.

Immunizations Health Issues - No immunizations are required to enter the country. Mosquito repellant is a necessary addition to your toiletries, as they can be thick. Also, no one on the island, including locals, drinks the water from the tap, so buy some bottled in a local market.

Martinique Marriage License & Wedding Requirements Information

Most people choose only to renew their vows or to have a wedding celebration on the island of Martinique, as the law requires one of the parties to be a Martinique resident (with proof) for over one month prior to the wedding.

Climate Information (When is the Best Time to Travel)

The temperature in Martinique averages 79 degrees year round and only varies about 5 degrees from summer to winter. There are light tropical rains that can come and go quickly, but the weather is beautiful for traveling and enjoying the island year round.

High & Low Season for travel: High season runs from mid-November through May, and the island can be quiet the rest of the year, with some hotels closing down for months, particularly in September and October. Those places that remain open offer significant discounts.

Local Attractions & Must Do’s

You must go to the city of Fort-de-France, the capital, to see the New Orleans’ like atmosphere with European charm and a tropical twist. There are multiple restaurants and parks. The Aquarium de Martinique boasts nearly 250 species of sea creatures is a great place to spend an afternoon.

The Balata Botanical Gardens is a beautiful place to see some of the areas best flora and since it has been maintained for over 20 years, the garden is just spectacular. La Pagerie is the birthplace of Josephine, Napoleon’s wife, and you can see the museum dedicated to her life there including personal relics and a love letter from Napoleon.

The city of St-Pierre was nearly completely destroyed by Mt. Pelee when it erupted in 1902. The museum there shows all types of artifacts discovered in the excavations of the cities ruins.

You may also want to check out some of the island’s hot spots for scuba diving and snorkeling. Windsurfing and waterskiing are also popular activities for locals and tourists alike.

Grenada – General Overview

Grenada is a three island state about 100 miles north of Venezuela. The largest island is Grenada which is 21 miles long and 12 miles wide. There is rich history that accompanies the beauty of the island. There are old plantations and rum distilleries, beaches and coral reefs, black and white sand beaches, and scenery that includes waterfalls, rivers, mountains and rainforests. There are approximately 45 beaches and several national parks. Hiking, biking, bird watching, and waterfall enthusiasts all will find Grenada an exciting adventure.

Most Popular Beaches

Grand Anse Beach – is located on the western side of the island keeping it sheltered and calm. It is a white sand beach and a traveler’s favorite. There is much to offer such as restaurants, hotels, bars, many water sports including scuba diving and is easily accessible.

Morne Rouge Beach – There are no water sports on this beach leaving it to be a quiet relaxing paradise for those that just want to soak up the suns rays. It tends to be warmer here and is ideal for families as the water is fairly shallow.

Pink Gin Beach - lies at the tip of the island and overlooks Point Salines Airport. This beach is more secluded and the sand is a pinkish color with awesome waters. There are all sorts of water sports or you can just sit back and relax.

Grenada has an international Airport and offers travel from the US stopping in Puerto Rico, and a direct flight from NY to Grenada via Air Jamaica. BWIA offers flights from NY, Miami and Washington DC to Trinidad connecting on to Grenada.

Air Canada offers connecting flights into Grenada and will sometimes offer daily direct flights to Grenada seasonally.

Travel to Grenada from Europe is best through London. Several airlines have weekly direct flights from London to Grenada.

Travel in Grenada is simple. There are taxis, minibuses, rental cars, and water taxis. Rentals cars require a local drivers license that can be purchased that the rental car place and there are usually age requirements, and its good to purchase their insurance. Water taxis are about $12 and are a pretty short trip but offer views of the harbor and beaches, traveling between Grand Anse Beach and St. George.

Entry Requirements

A valid passport and return or onward ticket is required for all visitors. However, proof of citizenship bearing a photograph is acceptable from British, Canadian and US citizens. Please note however that as mandated by the United States Department of Homeland Security, all US travelers must provide a passport to enter or re-enter the US from both vacation and business travel.

A visa is not required from citizens of the US, Canada, UK, British Commonwealth, most Caribbean countries, most European countries, South Korea, and Japan.

Languages Spoken / official language – English is the official language spoken in Grenada. There is the common French African patois spoken as well.

Currency – Grenada uses the Eastern Caribbean dollar (EC) and is fixed against the US dollar at 2.70 EC to $1 USD. US dollars are widely accepted.

Taxes & Tipping - There is an 8% Government tax at hotels and restaurants, and most add a 10% service charge. If the service charge has not been applied to your bill then a 15% tip is appreciated. Taxi drivers receive an additional 10-15% tip over the fare, and porters and bellhops receive $1 per bag.

Electricity – Voltage is 220 – 50 cycles. American appliances will require a transformer, adapter, and converter. Some hotels can provide these, but speak to the staff before traveling.

Immunizations Health Issues - There are no immunizations required to enter Granada. Hepatitis A and B are recommended.

Grenada Marriage License & Wedding Requirements Information

In Grenada the law requires that visitors be resident on the island for a minimum of three (3) days (including weekends and public holidays) before applying for a license. On the third day, the necessary stamp duty and license fees are paid, and an application for a Marriage License is made in person, at the Office of the Prime Minister.

Generally the license is ready within two (2) working days. This maybe slightly longer if either partner is divorced, as documents must then be sent to the Ministry of Legal Affairs.

Grenada’s climate is hot with temperatures averaging 85 degrees F. The rainy season is June to November and averages rain 22 days a month. January – April considered dry months still receive rain about 12 days a month. Hurricane season is June to November.

Fort Fredrick was built in 1700’s and gives a great view of the harbor. Grand Etang Crater Lake is an extinct volcano. The lake grows many things like groves of bananas cocoa, and nutmeg. Annandale Falles is a waterfall that is surrounded by foliage.

Bel air Plantation Villa Resort – is a 4 star resort featuring 18 tropical acres of ground, located 3 miles from the airport. There is a small secluded beach, water sports, waterfront gardens and a water’s edge restaurant.

True Blue Bay Resort – is located on the south coast of Grenada. Facilities offer a marina, two swimming pools, free kayaking, snorkeling, scuba diving, sailing trips boat fuel and on site restaurants.

The Flamboyant Hotel and Villa – is four miles from the center of town and three miles from the airport. There is a swimming pool, game room parties, buffets, crab racing. Rooms give a view of St. George’s town and harbor.

Calabash Hotel is a five star hotel located on 19 acres with 30 suites arranged in a horseshoe shape. The resort is intimate, private, and offers a variety of activities on land and sea.

La Source Beach Resort is a four star hotel that is all inclusive. It is located on Pink Gin Beach and is surrounded by 40 acres of tropical gardens. It is located five minutes from the airport and 15 minutes from the center of St. George.   There are 100 rooms from ocean view to luxury.

Dominica – General Overview

Not to be confused with the Dominican Republic, Dominica is the most mountainous and largest of the leeward islands. There is plentiful vegetation and a thriving tropical forest. The northern part hosts white sandy beaches and the remainder of the coast is dryer and has grey sand. Turtle bay where the turtles come to lay their eggs. Dominica is known for its hospitality and welcoming spirit. Nature has provided much to see in Dominica like waterfalls, and boiling volcanic pools, beaches of black and golden sands, along with mountain streams and rivers.

Prince Rupert’s Bay beach is where “Pirates of the Caribbean” was filmed. Champagne and Soufriere Beaches have hot springs! There are several shops and loads of beautiful fish. On Soufriere Beach there is a historical Catholic Church right on the water. Pointe Baptiste is a white sand beach and a black sand beach. It was once home to pirates, and now is a vacationer’s paradise.

Melville Hall Airport is the older of two airports that service Dominica The other is Canefield and is located 3 miles north of Roseau. There are no direct non stop flights from Europe or USA because the airports are too small for jets. There is a $14 departure tax.

There are two main ports – Woodbridge Bay and Prince Rupert Bay.

Cruise ships stop at Woodbridge Bay. There are island hopping ferry services that connect with Guadeloupe, St. Lucia and Martinique on a 300 seat catamaran. There are taxis available but look for the uniformed drivers as they are trained. There is car hire and you must be between 25 and 64 and have 2 years driving experience to apply for a local permit at the cost of $12. Sightseeing is best by jeep and minibus tours.

Entry Requirements

Passports are required for re-entry to the US. Visas are not required for US, British, and Canadian citizens for stays up to 6 months.

Languages Spoken / official language – The official language is English. The national language is Creole French and is spoken by most of the population.

Currency – The official currency is the East Caribbean Dollar (EC) and 1 EC equals 2.67 USD. The US dollar is accepted everywhere but the euro is not.

Taxes & Tipping - There is a 15% value added tax (10% on accommodation. Most restaurants charge a 10% service charge to the final bill. If the service charge is not included then traveler should tip 10-15%.

Porters and bellhops receive $1 per bag and taxi drivers that help with bags should be tipped accordingly. Tips for the taxi driver are generally not required.

Electricity – The electrical system is 220-240 volts, 50 cycles. Some hotels have 110 but travelers would be wise to bring adapters along.

Immunizations Health Issues -  There are no required vaccines for entry to Dominica. However it is recommended that Hepatitis A and B be taken and if traveling to rural areas a typhoid vaccine is recommended.

Dominica Marriage License & Wedding Requirements Information

At least one member of the party must be in Dominica for a minimum of two (2) days prior to the ceremony.

Birth Certificates and passports are required.

Completed application form ‘G’ must be signed by both parties and witnessed by a magistrate.

Each party must sign a completed declaration form before a Commissioner of Oaths. $5.00 postage stamp must be affixed to each form and marital status form.

If married before, decree of divorce or death certificate of former spouse must be produced.

A license fee of $300.00 must be paid on submission of above-listed documents.

Application form is obtainable from Ministry of Community Development & Women Affairs. The form must be returned to the same Ministry duly signed, witnessed and accompanied by the requested proof of identity and marital status.

After processing the application a marriage license is issued by the Ministry of Community Development.

This license must be presented to the Registrar at the time of the marriage ceremony.

Entry Requirements

In general, tourists nay enter the Netherlands Antilles, without a written permit and may remain for a period not exceeding fourteen days (for US citizens, the stay is extended to not more than 3 months).

Furthermore, the following conditions apply to a touristic stay in the Netherlands Antilles:

Tourists should be in possession of one a passport; A return or outward ticket on arrival; The necessary documents for returning to the country of origin, or further travel elsewhere. Tourists must have sufficient means at their disposal to be able to support themselves during their stay in the Netherlands Antilles and must be able to prove this to the appropriate authority upon arrival, if so requested.

Tourists are not allowed to work, to look for, or to accept work without the explicit consent of the Lieutenant Governor of the respective island territory.

Languages Spoken / official language – The official language of Curacao is Dutch. The most commonly spoken language is Papiamentu. English and Spanish are both spoken often and known by most natives.

Currency –  US currency is accepted but bills over $20 can be hard to cash. Netherlands Antillean guilder (florin) is the national currency and is exchanged at a stable rate of $1USD = $1.77 NAFL.

Taxes & Tipping - It is customary to tip porters 1 NAFL per bag, and taxi drivers 10% of the fair. Most hotels add 12% charge to the bill and there is a Government 5% sales tax added. Restaurants add 10% service charge to the bill and you can tip a few cents if you wish. There is an airport tax of $22 for international flights and $10 for inter-island flights.

Electricity – Electricity is 110-130 volts/50 cycles, similar but not identical to the US standard. Most appliances will work but could overheat or if using an internal time mechanism, may fail. Although many will work, an adapter would be wise. Dual voltage appliances will need an adapter plug – available on the island.

No immunizations are necessary for entry to Curacao. Curacao’s water is some of the worlds finest and safe to drink.

Curacao Marriage Licenses & Wedding Requirements Information

You and your future life partner must be living outside the Netherlands Antilles.

At least two months before your wedding day you must notify in writing from abroad that you wish to be married. Together with your request you add the corresponding original documents mentioned at item #6. As to the passport, a copy is sufficient for the time being. Please state more than one wedding date. (See further instructions at item #6 for a clear explanation concerning the necessary documents.

Within two weeks after the Register Office has received and checked your documents, you will be notified Ð if everything is in order Ð when and at time your marriage will be performed. If there are any documents lacking, or not in order, or if more documents are necessary, you will be informed at this time.

The legal ten-day period between the notification of your wedding and the performing of it, is effective two weeks after all the documents have arrived at the Register Office. All documents must by that time have been approved by the Register Office.

In order to identify the bridal couple it is important that you report to the Register Office 3 days at the latest before your get married; you can then also make the acquaintance of the official of the Register Office.

This complicated rule is in your own interest to safeguard your marriage and to allow for any contingency. Your have to hand in the following original documents together with your notice of marriage, or you must have these documents with you when you are on the island:

a) Birth Certificate (not older than 6 months)
b) Valid passport
c) Evidence that you are single (not older than 6 months)

d) If your were divorced or if you are a widow/widower, please present

evidence of this (not older than 6 months).

e) You may be asked for more documents, this depends on your personal circumstances. You will be notified on this item as per item #3.

Owen Roberts International Airport is located on Grand Cayman Island. Direct flights are offered from many United States cities. Canada has a direct flight from Toronto and Europe has one from London.   There is a departure tax of $25 but is usually included in your ticket price.

Cruise ships oven dock at George Town on Grand Cayman and at Creek on Cayman Brac.

Traveling between islands is done by chartering a private boat or by air. Private boat shuttles can be found to travel between the smaller islands for a small fee. Neither of the smaller islands have taxis but hotels will pick travelers up.

There is a minibus that travels the large island but renting a car is a better means of transportation. Rental cars can be dropped at your hotel and you must be 21 and have a valid driver’s license.

Motorcycles and scooters are available as well.
Entry Requirements

All travelers to the Caymans must have a valid passport. Canadian citizens do not require passports but must present proof of citizenship including passport or birth certificate and a photo ID – photocopies of birth certificates must have the copy notarized by a notary public.

US, Canadian, and British Citizens as well as citizens of a number of European nations don’t need a visa to visit.

Languages Spoken / official language – The national language of the Caymans is English. However, nearly half the population speaks Creole French.

The Cayman Islands no longer has a wait to get married. Couples can marry the day they arrive. There are many wedding planners available and most of the hotels provide these services. What you will need:

1.      a non-residents marriage license, and…

2.      a letter from the authorized Marriage Officer who is to officiate.

Applications for non-resident marriage licenses ($200 U.S.) and a list of licensed Marriage Officers can be obtained from the Deputy Chief Secretary’s Office. (On Cayman Brac this is provided by either the Deputy Chief Secretary or the District Commissioner’s Office)

The rainy season starts in May and lasts through October. March and April are the driest. Average rainfall is about 45 inches. The hurricane season runs from June to November peaking in September and October. Winter is November to April with temps ranging between 70 and 85 during the day and dropping to the 60’s at night. Summer is May to October and temps fluctuate between 85 and 95 daytime and 73 to 85 at night. Humidity varies between 68 and 92%.

Currency – Currency used on Bonaire is called the Netherlands Antillean Florin (NAFL or FL), also known as “guilder” or “Gulden”. It is tied in value to the US dollar and has a conversion rate of approximately 1.78to $1USD. It is not necessary to exchange dollars for NAfL’s (any other currency needs to be exchanged). However, your change will most likely be in NAFL’s. Most places won’t take currency larger than a $20 bill.

Tipping & Taxes - Gratuity is sometimes added to your bill so be sure or if unsure ask. 10-15% is typical for services. Porters and bellhops should be 50 cents a bag, and taxi drivers receive 10% of their fare.

Bonaire Marriage Licenses & Wedding Requirements Information

You need to allow four to six weeks for all the paper work. One of the couple needs to procure a temporary residency permit from immigration.

To apply for a temporary residency permit the following are required:

brought to the island, if applicable)

After arrival on Bonaire, it takes four working days to arrange for all the forms to be processed. If you are arriving on a Saturday or Sunday and the following Monday happens to be a holiday, you will have to wait the four working days until you are able to marry and there may be a problem getting the permission arranged on time. It is advisable to check with the agency that handled your papers as to the holiday schedules. The best suggestion is to allow a full week for the papers to go through.

The British Virgin Islands (BVI) provides every type of traveler with a variety of things to do. They are made up of 60 plus islands making it a destination for fishing, sailing, sun soaking, and romantic getaways. However, it is not a stop for the cost-conscious.

Virgin Gorda – Is surrounded by giant boulders, some as big as houses. You can climb between them to swim in pools or follow the shore north to more private quieter bays. The island is 8 ½ miles long and the third largest in the island chain. There are many restaurants on the beach and the Copper Mine is near by. Plan on the lingering lifestyle to take hold of you!

Tortola – Snorkeling, scuba diving, sailing, or horseback riding take place on the deep blue waters of Tortola. This is the largest of the BVI’s, and is the hub of the chain. Accommodations range from beach cottages to plush posh hotels. There are many shops along the beach as well as restaurants.

Anegada – Many years ago ships were lost on this treacherous reef that provides today’s visitors something to remember. They are home to exotic fish and are a paradise for underwater lovers. The island is made of coral sand, is the home of the best Caribbean lobster! There are small hotels and guest houses along the south shore and plenty of shad to enjoy the drinks of the local pub.

There is no nonstop service from the continental US, Canada, Europe or South America. Connections are made through San Juan, Puerto Rico, or St. Thomas.   There are three airports on BVI – Tortola (TOV), Virgin Gorda (VIJ), and Anegada. The major airport is the Terrence B Lettsome Airport (EIS).

BVI is 4 ¾ hours from New York City, and 10 hours from Los Angeles. Sea ports are located in Road Town, West End on tortola, Great harbor on Jost Van Dyke and Virgin Gorda.

There are roads that lead to all the BVI’s, and there are connecting airports which make travel a little easier.

Entry Requirements - All American travelers must have a passport and photo ID. You must also present return tickets and upon entry no more than 60 days are granted. Extensions are possible by contacting the Immigration Officer at the Immigration Department’s main office. It is wise to check the British Govt’s website at http://www.britainusa.com for current visa info.

Currency – The United States dollar is the currency used in BVI.

Tipping & Taxes - Taxes in BVI are as follows: 7% hotel tax, 10% service charge, $10 departure tax by air, and $5 by sea.

Tipping is 10-15% if it isn’t included on your bill, no tips are required for taxi drivers unless they go above and beyond the call of duty, and $1 per bag for bell hops.

Climate Information (When is the Best Time to Travel)

BVI is a sub tropical climate with a temperature range of 77-85 degrees F. Because of the winds, temps usually drop 10 degrees at night. These winds blow at a constant speed most of the year except for hurricane season. BVI is exposed to tropical storm winds of up to 100 miles per hour or greater. Rainfall averages 40 inches per year and some mountainous areas over 70 inches. The wettest months are September to December and driest are February to April.

Many of the Islands have charters available to see the sights. There are many beaches to relax by and enjoy a tropical drink on the sandy beach. Many of the beaches offer snorkeling and scuba diving amongst the colorful waters and vivid life under water. There are some historical sites as well, for instance the Callwood Distillery which is on of the last of its kind in BVI.

Mt. Healthy National Park is a symbol of the sugar plantation era in BVI and has intact remains of a stone windmill part of an 18th century sugar plantation.

Barbados – General Overview

ACCRA/ROCKLY BEACH is one of the most popular among locals and visitors. It is the longest and widest stretch of beach on the south cost. BATH is the “safest” swimming beaches along the Atlantic side as there is usually a lifeguard. There are parking, changing and eating places. BATHSHEBA is known for its big and powerful waves and has great pools in the reefs for those that don’t surf. There are many restaurants and hotels in the area. It is also known as the “Soup Bowl.” BOTTOM BAY is protected by jagged cliffs and is lined with coconut palms. It is located just north of the famous Sam Lord’s Castle. BRIGHTON BEACH is calm most of the year with very little undertow and has an exceptionally long stretch of beach with minor breaks of rock and reef. CATTLEWASH is the longest beach on the island and a popular sightseeing and relaxing spot. This beach is long and deserted and waves and undertow currents are very strong. A lifeguard station is on the beach, so be sure to ask advice if you are unfamiliar or have questions. CRANE BEACH is considered one of the island’s most beautiful beaches. Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous rated it as “one of ten best beaches in the world”.   DOVER BEACH is at the south end of the St. Larence Gap strip. There are a number of facilities nearby and the waves are medium in size. FOLKSTONE BEACH has many water related activities, fresh water showers, and shops. MULLINS BAY has many facilities a picture perfect bay with a perfect beach almost all year and is also good for snorkeling. NORTH POINT COVE is a great place for the strong swimmer. It is beautiful but has rough seas and serious undertow. Large waves dominate this beach most of the year so again, only for the strong swimmer. PAYNES BAY is a popular west coast beach with water sports, eating and parking facilities and a beach that is always calm with no undertow.

Getting around

The ZRs, privately-owned mini-vans, are plentiful in Barbados and travel to most points on the island. The vans generally having a color-scheme of white with maroon, and they often play loud music or use a musical horn. A black circle on the van carries the number of the route. Routes served are often more scenic than those served by other modes of transport.

There are also buses found frequently in many parts of Barbados. Buses run seven days of the week, although services are less frequent on Sundays. Buses, typically in blue, are government operated.

Most public transport services require a connection through Bridgetown, although some services run directly to other destinations. Some hotels also provide visitors with shuttles to points of interest on the island. Taxis are available but tend to cost more depending on what the destination is.

Barbados offers car rental and is provided by many vehicle rental places. Foreign drivers in Barbados must have a temporary driver’s license in addition to an international driver’s license.

Entry Requirements

Every person entering Barbados, including all North American citizens (Americans and Canadians), should be in possession of a valid passport and a valid return ticket.   All visitors with the exception of the citizens of the Caribbean Community, the USA, Canada and the United Kingdom are expected to obtain a visa before traveling to Barbados.

Languages Spoken / official language - The official language is English but the Bajan dialect is often spoken

Currency – The official unit of currency in Barbados is the Barbadian dollar. Foreign exchange transactions are also done in EC (Eastern Caribbean) dollars, US dollars, Pounds, Canadian and Euro dollars.

Tipping - Many restaurants will add a percentage of gratuity to your bill, after checking to make sure you don’t tip twice 10 to 15% is acceptable. Bartenders receive a customary tip of $1 per round unless the order was large and then at tippers discretion. Hotels generally add a 10% gratuity to the final bill. Maids should be tipped $2 per day and bellhops $1 per bag. Tipping at an all-inclusive resort is generally prohibited, check with your resort policies. Taxi drivers usually receive a 10% tip and $1 per bag for luggage. Airport porters usually receive $1 per bag for handling.

Taxes – Barbados has a VAT (Value Added Tax) of 15% that is a sales tax charged on all goods and services.

Electricity –110 volts 50Hz with standard plug ins. Converters are provided by most hotels for European and Asian appliances. Converters are not necessary for Americans.

Immunizations Health Issues - While no vaccinations are necessary for travel to Barbados it is highly recommended to have a Hepatitis A Vaccine, and a Hepatitis B vaccine if there will be intimate contact with local residents. Two doses of MMR (measles mumps rubella) are recommended for all travelers born after 1956, and if travelers are from yellow fever infected areas in Africa or the Americas then a yellow fever vaccine is required.

The drinking water in Barbados is safe to drink and is managed by the Barbados Water Authority, a government statutory corporation.


Barbados Marriage Requirements, Licenses & Wedding Information

No advance notice is required to get married in Barbados, and the law allows an official ceremony to be performed as soon as the license is obtained. Both parties must be present to apply for a marriage license at the office of the Ministry of Home Affairs in Bridgetown.

Your wedding coordinator or Hotel management will be able to help you in making the arrangements to secure your license.

FEE: The marriage license fee is $200BBD with $25BBD Barbados postage stamp, and $10 for the marriage certificate.

Sun shines 340 days of the year in Barbados with an average day time temperature of 80-85 degrees. Night time temperatures usually average 76 degrees.
