Climate Information & The Best Time to Travel

The coast of Northern California has a very mild climate with cool summers (daily highs around 64°F) and warm winters (daily highs around 44°F). This is due to the cool California current offshore and upwelling of cold sub-surface waters, which also often create summer fog near the coast (which could be quite enchanting). So while winter certainly isn’t freezing, it’s best to stick to the warmer months.

High & Low Season for Travel

As with most places, the low season is when it’s cold (unless you’re after a ski resort!). So if you want a good day for a wedding in Northern California, it’s best to pay the extra dollars for warmer weather. You could also consider weekdays (Monday through Thursday), when you’ll find cheaper airfares and accommodation rates.

Local Attractions & Must Do’s

Whether you’re an outdoor adventurer or someone who just wants to connect with nature, Northern California is the place to be. Hiking, cycling, boating, fishing, swimming, bird watching, whale watching – it’s all here.

Oh, and don’t forget the wine! With more than 2,800 registered wineries in the state, there’s a lot of sipping to be done. Known around the world for its wine, the best place in California for wine tasting would have to be Sonoma County.

But that’s not all Sonoma County has to offer, with 76 miles of coastline and an African safari, there’s lots more to do.

For the best of the outdoors, Del Norte County is second-to-none. It’s world-renowned for its towering ancient redwoods, the pristine waters of its rivers, excellent fishing, and exceptional bird watching. Located in the most northwestern corner of California on the rugged Pacific coast, it also boasts spectacular beaches.

If you’re more of an arty kind of person, then Mendocino County is for you. While still offering so much of the outdoors to explore, it really is all about the art, with more artists and galleries per capita than any other rural County in the US. So let your imagination run wild!

Getting Married in Bonaire – General Overview

One of the best-kept secrets in the Dutch Caribbean and just 50 miles north of Venezuela, Bonaire is unspoilt and laid-back.

A relatively undeveloped island with only two real towns and an area of 111 square miles, natural beauty is its main attraction. Fringed by a coral reef that begins at the water’s edge in most places, inland you’ll find a variety of cacti, fossilized coral, caves and volcanic rock.

Although the beaches are mostly slivers of rocky sand, you can find some nice spots for a wedding ceremony, as well as many places overlooking the amazing scenery and the turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea.

Some beaches even have a pink hue, produced from coral that has been washed ashore and ground into small pieces – and if you’re lucky you might even see the rare pink flamingo!

One thing’s for sure about a wedding on Bonaire – it’s about being relaxed and keeping things simple.

Boka Slagbaai - Although there are some rocky patches, this is a beautiful beach with a good amount of sand. For those who like historic buildings, there are some nearby dating back to 1869.

Lac Bay - The tranquil waters and the sand on this beach make it a swimming paradise. Just keep in mind that there are bands playing from two in the afternoon at the weekend!

Pink Beach - Easily accessible, Pink Beach is in fact pink, due to the coral that has been washed ashore. Near the flamingo’s habitat in the south, you might just catch a glimpse of this rare bird here.

Playa Chikitu - In Washington National Park, Playa Chikutu is a beautiful spot. As swimming is forbidden due to the dangerous current, you won’t have to deal with too many tourists!

Private Beaches - Some of the resorts in Bonaire have their own private sandy beaches and offer wedding packages to suit.

Traveler Facts

Travel & Transportation (airports, ferries, etc). How to get there.

There are numerous international carriers serving the island of Bonaire. The airport is called Flamingo International Airport.

Entry Requirements; passports, visa, etc.

· You will need either a valid passport or your original birth certificate along with a valid driver’s license. Whether or not you need to apply for a visa depends upon your citizenship. You can check your requirements at: http://www.infobonaire.com/entryrequirements.html

· The maximum a visitor can stay is three months (90 days) in a six-month period (180 days). Visitors may leave and return during the timeframe of 180 days until 90 days are reached. However, citizens requiring a visa might have a reduced maximum stay period, depending upon what their visa stipulates.

· Dutch citizens are allowed to stay up to six months in a 12-month period. They may stay longer by applying for a residence permit. If their parents were born on Bonaire, this rule does not apply.

Languages Spoken / Official Language - The official language is Dutch, since Bonaire is part of the Netherlands, however Papiamentu is the local language, and English and Spanish are also used.

Currency - The official currency is US dollar (as of 1 January 2011).

Tipping - Tipping in Bonaire is very important as service employees earn very little or no base salary and the tips they earn comprise the vast majority of their income. Tipping is much the same as in the US. For restaurants (waiters, bartenders) tip 10-15% of the total bill (check first if the tip has been automatically added to your bill). For taxi drivers and dive or other services, a 10% tip is standard; tip daily for chambermaids depending on the number of people staying and the state of your rooms (US$3 per day is a good guide); and tip porters US$1 per bag, more if you have very heavy luggage or they have to walk up stairs. Always tip in cash!

Taxes - In Bonaire there is an 8% tax on virtually all services (ABB tax), however retail items are normally exempt from this tax. A Departure Tax of US$35 for international destinations is due at the airport upon departure, however this is only payable if it is not already included in your airfare.

Electricity - The electrical systems in most residential and commercial sites in Mexico use 220-240V – double that used in the US. There is no way to know if your appliance is compatible with this higher voltage, except to check, which could ‘fry’ your appliance or even start a fire! Having said that, most modern digital appliances (especially those that run on batteries) are now made to be compatible with voltages worldwide, from 100V in Japan to 240V in the UK. Such appliances include cell phones, digital cameras, digital camcorders, digital music players, portable game devices, laptops and PDAs – at higher voltages they will just get a bit ‘hotter’.

In Bonaire, dive shops and resorts offer guests stations for charging camera batteries and other such equipment, and it’s recommended that you use these to avoid damaging delicate equipment.

The electrical plug in use is one of the European standard electrical socket types: the Type C Europlug, or the Type E and Type F Schuko. Visitors from the US will need an adaptor. http://electricaloutlet.org/type-e

Other (immunizations, health issues)

All travellers going overseas should be up-to-date with their routine vaccinations, which are usually given to babies and children, with some boosters given in adult life. Adults should have had a Tetanus booster in the last 10 years and consider having an Influenza vaccination if they have not had one in the past year.

In Bonaire all mains water is distilled from seawater and it’s safe to drink. Bottled mineral water is widely available. Milk is pasteurised and dairy products are safe for consumption. Local meat, poultry, seafood, fruit and vegetables are generally considered safe to eat.

A yellow fever certificate is required from all travellers over six months of age coming from infected areas. Occasionally outbreaks of dengue fever occur in the area. Vaccination against Hepatitis B and Tuberculosis, if not already administered as part of routine vaccinations, is recommended.

Climate Information (When is the Best Time to Travel)

The climate is beautiful year-round; moderate with little rainfall (less than 22 inches annually) and very few tropical storms. There’s very little variation between months (it doesn’t have seasons typical of temperate climates), with January, the coldest month, seeing average highs of 84ºF, and July through September, the warmest months, seeing average highs of 89ºF. So with a variation of just 5ºF between the coldest and the warmest times of year, anytime is a good time for a wedding in Bonaire.

High & Low Season for Travel

High season, when the price of travel and accommodation is higher, is from December 15 to April 14 (with a peak around Christmas). Low season runs through the remainder of the year, from April 15 to December 14.

Local Attractions & Must Do’s

One of the top three scuba diving destinations in the world, Bonaire is a diver’s paradise. The beautiful underwater landscapes, crystal-clear waters and rich marine life of Bonaire Marine Park make it unforgettable.

For the less adventurous, try snorkeling over the coral reefs. If you’re not a great swimmer it’s best to stick to the calm western side; besides, the coral grows better there.

An ideal location for windsurfing, Lac Bay is the best spot for beginners, while the stronger and more experienced windsurfers could try the leeward (eastern) side. Bonaire also offers excellent deep sea and light tackle fishing, hosting several fishing tournaments each year.

Moving inland, you should visit Washington Slagbaai National Park, which covers the northern 20% of the island. Home to numerous bird and reptile species and native plants, it’s almost completely untouched, except for some historic buildings.

Finally, you can’t visit Bonaire without at least trying to spot a pink flamingo in its native habitat, and the best place to do that is The Pink Lake Flamingo Sanctuary in the south.

Travel & Transportation (airports, ferries, etc)

There are two international airports in Costa Rica. There is the Juan Santa Maria International Airport, in Alajuela, also known as the San Jose Costa Rica Airport due to its proximity to the capital city. The other smaller international airport is Daniel Oduber International Airport, which is close to the beaches and resorts of the northwest Pacific coast of Costa Rica.

You can rent a car; prices are around US$40 per day and US$300 a week. If you want a 4WD, prices go up to US$50 per day and $350-$800 per week. However a private driver might also suit, depending on what you want to do and where you want to go. Taxis can be just as convenient, and they are readily available. Just make sure you use a legal taxi (red in color) since they have a meter, known as “La Maria”, as well as insurance.

Entry Requirements; passports, visa, etc.

·           Citizens of the US, Canada, the UK, Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, Ireland and most EU countries do not need a visa for a stay of up to 90 days but do need a valid passport.

·           Of the countries in Central America, only Nicaraguans need a visa.

Tipping

Hotels add a 10% service charge plus a 3% tourist tax to their bills by law. In tourist and upmarket restaurants a tip of 10% is usual, however some already include a 17% sales and service tax in the bill. Taxi drivers are not normally tipped, but tour guides are. For chambermaids US$3 per day is a good guide and for porters US$1, more if you have very heavy luggage or they have to walk up stairs. In general if service has been particularly good, staff appreciate a 5-10% tip. Always tip in cash.

Taxes

The departure Tax is $26 per person. It can be paid at the airport on your day of departure or at banks and hotels throughout the country. You can pay this tax with CRC, USD or your credit card.

Climate Information & Best Time to Travel

Costa Rica has a tropical climate with little variation throughout the year and distinct wet and dry seasons. In the coastal areas, the temperature is much hotter and more humid than inland, while the northwest Pacific coast can be extremely hot and dry. Most coastal areas have average highs of around 81°F throughout the year. The rainy season starts in May and finishes in November, although there are distinct regional variations. The best time of year to visit weather-wise is in December and January, when everything is still green from the rains, but the sky is clear.

High & Low Season for Travel

Costa Rica's high season for tourism runs from late November to late April, which coincides almost perfectly with the chill of winter in the US and Canada. The high season is also the dry season. During this period (and especially around the Christmas holiday), prices are higher, attractions are more crowded, and reservations need to be made in advance. At other times of the year you can get better deals however, you do need to like a bit of rain.

Jamaica is a wildly popular destination for travelers all over the world.  Made famous by their unique style of hospitality and their wonderful culture.  The island offers hundreds of hotels and resorts, many all-inclusive, to make you stay unforgettable.  The white, sandy beaches and sparkling blue waters, coupled with the lush green landscape, streams and waterfalls make this a place of unsurpassed beauty.  There are plenty of adventures to be had for those who are looking for an exciting time, with snorkeling, scuba diving, parasailing, and water skiing available at many locations on the island.  Jamaica also has a rich history and vibrant culture that is waiting to be explored.  This is a great romantic getaway and  has all the makings of a dream vacation.

Most popular Beach Locations:

In Montego Bay, you can head for Doctors Cave Beach which boasts 5 miles of beautiful white beaches.  The water is clear blue and clam, so it’s a perfect place to swim.  Also in the area is Cornwall Beach which has some of the softest, sugary sand on the island.  Be ready to face the crowds and vendors, because this is on of the island’s busiest beaches.

If you stay in Negril, you will want to check out Seven Mile Beach, which is just what the name implies, seven miles of golden sands perfect for soaking up the sun. Keep in mind, certain sections are nudist beaches where fellow beach goers can bare it all.

Boston Bay Beach in Port Antonio is famous for it’s white sand and blue waters, but also for the jerk-pork stands that are irresistible.  It is also the best beach for surfing, and you can even rent boards and take lessons.

Treasure Beach, near South Coast, is a great place to escape the crowds, but be careful, because there is a dangerous undertow.  Swimming isn’t recommended, but it is great for sunbathing and offers some of the best beach views on the island.

Traveler Facts :

Travel & Transportation (airports, ferries, etc). How to get there.

          Currency

The official currency is the Jamaican dollar, but you will easily be able to exchange US currency at hotels and licensed cambios (banks).

          Tipping

Tipping is appreciated and expected by tour guides, taxi drivers, and in most restaurants an cafes.  However, on many resort properties, tipping is prohibited, especially if it is an all inclusive resorts.  In those situations do not attempt to tip because workers can lose their jobs if they accept any type of gratuity.

          Taxes

You will be taxed $10 arrival tax when you arrive via air ($2 if arriving by sea), and a $27 departure tax when leaving the island.  There is also a 15% VAT added into the price of most items you purchase.

Keep in mind, most prices are suggested and much higher than what merchants expect to receive.  Bartering is necessary and expected by both parties.  The first offer given by the merchant or vendor is usually more than double or triple what they are willing to accept for the item.

          Electricity

The current in Jamaica is 110 volts, the same as in the US, but only 50 cycles and the outlets take only two flat prongs. Some hotels provide 220-volt plugs as well as special shaver outlets, but it is best to inquire with your travel agent or the hotel itself regarding the type of outlets in your hotel of choice.

          Other (immunizations, health issues)

No immunizations are required to enter the country.   It is important to note that theft can be a major problem on the island and it is always best to utilize the safe in your hotel and traveler’s checks are a great idea, because they can be replaced if lost or stolen.  You also should be aware that you will encounter many people who may try to sell you ganja (marijuana) and you need to be aware that it is highly illegal and carries stiff penalties, almost always resulting in jail time.  Be prepared to issue a strong NO to those who ask if you “want to party?”, as spending your vacation time behind bars is not a great way to see this beautiful island.
